ARMORY FELLOWS

Beginning Fall Semester 2024, and running through Spring Semester 2025, the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) is offering a paid research internship position in their Curatorial Department. Open to University of North Florida undergraduate students. With the support from the Cummer Family Foundation.

The Armory South: The 1924 Jacksonville Woman’s Club Exhibition Rediscovered, will reassemble core works from a forgotten but seminal Modernist exhibition mounted in March 1924 by the Woman’s Club of Jacksonville and the newly founded Jacksonville Fine Arts Society (now MOCA). It will tell several related stories of essential importance to the history of women in Modern art, the introduction of Modernism to the American South, and the ideas and relationships shaping American art in the mid-1920s. The title is a nod to the 1913 Armory Show (also known as the International Exhibition of Modern Art) held in New York that, organized by the Association of American Painters and Sculptors. propelled the Modern art movement in America. In the same way, the 1924 Women’s Club Exhibition in Jacksonville marked the beginning of Modern art in the South. The exhibition included nearly 200 works by more than eighty cutting edge Modernist artists, including George Ault, Peggy Bacon, Charles DeMuth, John Dos Passos, Wood Gaylor, Marsden Hartley, Thomas Hart Benton, Walt Kuhn, Yasuo Kuniyoshi, and many more. Nearly one-third of the exhibiting artists were women. Beyond its contribution to understanding a forgotten regional history of American art, this exhibition will be an opportunity to reconsider both the neglected work of influential women artists and some of the now canonical artworks that shaped Modern art in America in the early twentieth century.

DESCRIPTION

This program is intended to give the opportunity to students to participate and support scholarly research related to the upcoming exhibition at MOCA Jacksonville, called The Armory South: The 1924 Jacksonville Woman’s Club Exhibition Rediscovered.

Under the guidance of Dr. P. Scott Brown, Guest Curator of the exhibition, and MOCA Senior Curator Ylva Rouse, the students will assist in conducting in-depth, art historical investigation connected with the exhibition. The candidates will work with MOCA Curatorial staff to research the artists and works of art, participate in the preparation of the exhibition, and contribute to the didactic material to be included in the catalogue and the galleries.

This transformative learning experience is aimed at providing undergraduate students with tools, skills, and experiences that will shape their future dissertation research and prepare them for further work as faculty, as well as for positions in museums, libraries, or other research settings.

APPLICATION TIMELINE

Student applications will open Monday, June 3 and close on Friday, August 9, 2024. The Fellowship will begin Fall Semester 2024, and continue through the following Spring Semester 2025. Student applicants should be considered active UNF students.

ACADEMIC CREDIT AND STIPEND INFORMATION

To best accommodate student financial and curricular needs, students will be able to choose between a non-academic credit option or an academic credit option. In conjunction with their faculty mentor and/or department chair, student applicants should determine the best fit for their major and program of study. The academic credit option will result in the student being charged applicable tuition and fees; however, the student will receive research or internship academic credits that are required in some majors. The non-academic credit option does not grant academic credits and the student will not incur tuition and fee charges.

The selected students will receive a stipend of $2,000 ($1,000 per term). The stipend will be disbursed at the end of each term. (Note that stipends are considered a form of taxable income and are subject to tax.)
